MISS KATIE

Katie Lam, born and raised in Edmonton, is a self-taught and passionate musician who is known for her dedication, enthusiasm, and musicality. She has performed for a variety of ensembles including concert and jazz bands, classical guitar, singing for jazz & contemporary, and choirs that includes Gold award-winning ensembles. Along her music journey, she has received numerous music awards and scholarships.

Katie started teaching herself piano only three years before entering university and had already possessed high achievements under the Royal Conservatory of Music. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music from King’s University where she focused her interests in piano, piano pedagogy, and instrumental and choral conducting. Along with these, she gained studies and practice in Music Moves, a music curriculum for all ages that builds on Orff, Kodály, Suzuki, and Dalcroze and applies Edwin E. Gordon's Music Learning Theory. As Katie is passionate about the foundational education in the early stages of learning, she also holds credentials in Kindermusik and combines movement and play into her classes.

Her unique music journey makes her a patient and encouraging teacher. Katie has taught a diverse group of students, from private and group classes to directing school choirs. She believes in different learning styles to meet students where they are at, and help them build confidence through engaging, fun and creative lessons.

“Music is more than just teaching an instrument and teaching changes lives. I love to teach and watch students grow, understand music, and turn it from something black and white into beautiful colours. I value a student’s learning and growth, where I can be part of their journey and watch this take flight.”
